Sculptural Ideas and Samples

Three Basic Wireshapes:

In order to practice for my three samples, I created three wireshapes in order to get accustomed to using wire to make models. I made sure each basic wireshapes made was different to help the experimentation process. I went for a Cube, Small Cylinder and a Large Cylinder. I felt that I should of used the gold wire to hold the wireshapes together, opposed to using grey wire due to the fact the wireshapes look less aesthetically pleasing due to sticking with one colour.

Card Board Model:

For my first sample, I decided to create a mini-beast by using cardboard and tape. I found this to be the easiest of the three samples to make, due to the cardboard being easier to put together than the wire and the Cardboard and Wire samples. Instead of using masking tape, I decided to try using sellotape, which I felt was stronger, and would keep the model together. I also felt that I could use more sellotape than I would masking tape, because the clear nature of sellotape means that my sample wouldn't look as messy as it would if I had put the same amount of masking tape. The potential of the cardboard is that the samples are easy to create, due to the easy to shape nature of cardboard and the fact it is easily cut. However, the limitations are that cardboard isn't as sturdy as wire, which led to the cardboard limbs on my sample being weak and unable to hold up the body as a result.

Card Board and Wire:

For my second sample, I decided to use both cardboard and wire. I used cardboard to make up the bugs body and wire to make the limbs and hold the cardboard together. I found this to be easier than my wire sample, but harder than my cardboard sample. I felt that the wire held the model together far better than sellotape could, but the wire was harder to manipulate and resulted in making the model look messier than intended. I felt that by using the wire as limbs, It could help prop up the model, which worked, opposed to using cardboard which didn't work for my previous sample. I feel that wire has the potential to create more complex models due to its nature of being easy to bend allowing for the creation of more complex shapes which I felt helped when it came to creating my second samples limbs. I felt that the wire used also has the advantage of being stronger than cardboard, which resulted in my samples limbs being able to hold the body up. Combined with the lightweight nature of the cardboard, the body was able to stay up with no signs of falling over.

Wire:

For my third sample I chose to use wire without any other material supporting it. I decided to just use wire because I had created a sample just using cardboard so I thought it would be best to mirror my actions with cardboard and create a sample comprising just of wire. The third sample was easy to manipulate in comparison to the prior samples due to the fact wire is inherently easy to manipulate than cardboard. I found the wire to be harder to neaten up than cardboard due to the fact that the wire was very hard to break into smaller pieces via various tools such as scissors. This resulted in a model that was much messier than expected and this detracted from the aesthetic quality of the third sample.

2D Illustration

For my first task, I had to create four different drawings of a "Mini Beast". I was to use 4 methods of drawing. The first being using my orthodox hand, but while blind. To achieve this, I put my pen through a piece of paper which obstructed my view allowing me to complete the drawing without having to close my eyes. I then went onto the second drawing. This is where I used my orthodox hand to draw a Mini Beast while keeping the line continuous and controlled. Upon completing this drawing, I then moved onto my third drawing which was the draw the same Mini Beast, but with my unorthodox hand. I was also to carry out this drawing while keeping the line controlled and continuous. My final drawing required me to sue my orthodox hand to draw the Mini Beast in a controlled manner, but I was able to use multiple lines. I found this was the easiest and as a result, this was my most accurate drawing.

Thread Drawing:

Once I had created my first four drawing's, my next task was to put Acetate over one of my drawings, in order to trace my bugs outline with thread. I was to then stick down the string using glue which would produce a thread drawing of the Mini Beast. I chose my third drawing to be the drawing to trace over. I then placed acetate over the drawing and held it in place via masking tape. I then used thread to trace my drawing while using glue to stick the thread down in certain places. I found the thread rather finicky to manipulate and the glue didn't stick the thread down immediately, so I had to avoid touching stuck down thread to avoid removing the thread from the acetate.

Wire Drawing:

With the thread drawing complete, I was to create a wire drawing of the same Mini Beast drawing I had chosen prior. In order to complete this task, I traced my original drawing using golden wire and I placed masking tape in certain places over the wire in order to stick it in place. I found the wire easier to manipulate than thread and I was able to create a more complex drawing as a result. The masking tape was also easier to apply than the glue, however, once the glue had dried, it stuck down the thread much more strongly than the masking tape stuck down the wire.
